GL events UK was National Supplier of Temporary Structures to the biggest global sporting occasion of 2017.
The event overlay specialist designed and installed integral temporary infrastructure that transformed the capital, radiating from the Championship’s heart at the London Stadium to incorporate event administration and operational hubs, merchandise and dining zones and the event broadcast centre, as well as premium hospitality and sponsor activations taking place at iconic London landmarks and throughout the city’s streets.
To support a schedule of 30 sessions of events taking place in front of record-breaking crowds across 20 action-fuelled days, GL events UK delivered 12,500sqm of floor space. This incorporated a diverse range of 65 marquees, pagodas and temporary structures, as well as more than 1,000 tiered spectator seats, 16 presentation stages and an array of medalists’ podiums.
A bespoke public access ramp and staircase were custom-manufactured and craned into place to reduce public disruption at the Tower of London Moat: the starting point for the competition’s marathon route. We installed an innovative system of suspended cables across London Bridge, supporting the provision of power and WiFi throughout the event and leading to a more interactive experience for spectators.
Following the success of this high-profile collaboration, GL events UK was awarded with a three-year contract to provide temporary structures across the complete portfolio of events managed by UK Athletics.
